Incubator for Twin Lifeforms

2017

Incubator for Twin Lifeforms is Neus’ first response to visiting Dr. Reuter’s laboratory at University College London. Inspired by the metamorphosis of the fruit fly: from larva to pupa to adult, and by how the flies were stored in fridges at different temperatures, she created this piece as part of her final Master’s project and as a precursor to the art residency she would undertake the following year.

The installation comprises an acrylic sculpture and a bioplastic counterpart, made by casting a mould of the acrylic form. A pulsing light beneath the sculpture emulates the warmth and rhythm of an incubator. The acrylic form appears to have emerged from the bioplastic casing, echoing the moment a fruit fly breaks free from its cocoon.
