CHOICE
2025
"Choice: the first word that came to my mind when thinking about human rights and childbirth. The Choice to have children or not, to decide when, where, with whom, and how to bring life into the world.
Society often assumes that all women desire motherhood. Growing up, the expectation that at some point I would want to have children was always there. But, as an adult, I have chosen not to.
I created a crochet piece using baby yarn: soft, warm, and comforting, like the care that should surround any birth. I chose a very light blue colour to evoke calmness and neutrality. I stitched the word CHOICE in stranded cotton in stronger blue tones, so it would stand out as a statement. Blue evokes trust, serenity, and clarity, qualities that reflect a decision made with awareness and intention.
This piece is a quiet protest against imposed expectations and an affirmation of every person’s right to choose."

Threads of Protest, by Dr Gemma McKenzie
CHOICE is a piece created for the project 'Threads of Protest' by Dr Gemma McKenzie.
Neus was invited to submit a 15 x 15 cm granny square that responded to the subject of Human Rights in Childbirth.
Her piece has been assembled with the other participants' responses to the topic, into a collective artwork designed to challenge and inform.
